Acne Myths: Acne Myth & Information

There are many myths about what causes acne.

Chocolate and greasy foods causes or worsens acne
Scientific studies have shown that taking chocolate or greasy foods does not have any effect on the development or course of acne. However this has been the most popular rumor about acne and there are people who claim it is true in their case. As a general rule, your body will always respond better to a good diet and lots of water.

Poor Hygiene causes acne
It is also believed that dirty skin causes or worsens acne therefore one has to wash the affected area often to keep the bacteria away and remove the excess oil and dead cells from the skin. Scientific research claims that this is not true. The bacteria, excess oil and dead cells are harbored deep under the follicles and it is not possible to remove then by just washing. Actually washing your skin too often and scrubbing would worsen the acne. Acne is not caused by dirt. Therefore only gentle cleansing is advised.

Sex causes acne
It is true that sexual activity affects hormonal levels and this in turn increasing sebum production. However there is no scientific evidence that it causes acne.

Stress causes acne
Again stress may affect the production of sebum but there is no scientific evidence that stress causes acne.

Acne is just a cosmetic disease.
It is obvious that acne can worsen your looks and can result in permanent physical scars, however, it is usually never life-threatening. This does not mean acne is a simple cosmetic disease though. Acne and its negatives can affect the way people feel about themselves to the point of affecting their self-image and confidence. When people cannot handle this in a healthy manner they may end up with depression that needs psychiatric intervention. One has to just let the acne clear up on its own by time.

The fact is, acne can be treated and cleared up. With the various treatment options available today, you don't have to live with it. Consult a dermatologist and decide what would work for you.

An obvious benefit of skin is that it protects our bodies' internal organs from harmful elements like dirt, insects, bites, toxic chemicals, nasty weather, and the like, and it certainly is more attractive than what's underneath.

When skin is healthy it's nice to look at, but when it's diseased, it can not only affect you physically, but more painfully can cause stress and social problems...(Click here to read the full article )
